The National Green School Coalition is a national, independent organization governed by a group of environmental professionals. We believe that every child deserves a healthy, sustainable environment in which to grow and flourish and it is our mission to be an instrumental part in creating those environments. We currently operate under 501(c) 6 non-profit standards and are in the process of attaining official status.
The National Green School Coalition was founded in 2009 by a small group of individuals who are passionate about Pediatric Environmental Health and who feel that safeguarding the health of America’s 58 million schoolchildren is neither an expensive luxury nor a passing fad; that it must be central to a high-quality education. Research shows that greener school environments can improve children’s health and learning. Yet our schools get dismal grades in environmental practices. In 2009 there were no standards or programs that fully encompassed lowering environmental toxins and increased sustainability in the Pre-School setting.
Our organization has made a conscious decision to concentrate our initial efforts on the infant through pre-k age group. Current research shows that children at this stage in life are significantly more vulnerable to exposure to environmental toxins and poor indoor air quality leading to illness or disease later on in life. Additionally, this age group is highly influenced by the behaviors and attitudes of their caregivers giving us immeasurable potential to create a positive impact on the next generation.
